How to Raise an Adult, a Reading Group

  • Highland Park United Methodist Church 3300 Mockingbird Lane Dallas, TX, 75205 United States (map)

A recent book, How to Raise An Adult: break free of the overparenting trap and prepare your kid for success, by Lythcott-Haims, has impressed me to the point that I am offering a special format: a Reading Group. Parents have raved about this format which is part learning, part support group, part taking action for home improvement! The group size is limited to permit participation and self-reflection.

There will be six 1.5 hour sessions during which we will discuss assigned readings from How to Raise an Adult and consider how to implement steps to promote our kids' independence. Topics will include:

  • creating a skills checklist for teens;

  • valuing play and down-time;

  • avoiding being"mothers without borders";

  • reconsidering our perspective on college admission;

  • promoting our kids' self-advocacy and confidence.

The last portion of the book considers what the author calls "the unlived life of parents."

Forty plus years and hundreds, perhaps thousands, of kids into this work, I can say that now more than ever, parents must intentionally resist the cultural current toward too much involvement. As Lythcott-Haims says,

"Our doing undoes them."
